Maslow before bloom

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a psychological theory that explains that the basic, survival needs of breathing, food, water, shelter, clothing and sleep have to be satisfied before an individual can accomplish higher needs. Higher needs include safety and security, love and belonging and self esteem. Therefore, basic needs need to be met before a child can learn and grow.

Maslow before Bloom is a phrase used throughout education. Benjamin Bloom created a taxonomy of educational objectives that shows the different thinking and learning aims that a child should achieve in order. The order of objectives are remember, understand, apply, analyse, evaluate and create. By achieving these in order it allows a child to be able to process information. None of these steps in a child's learning can occur if the child hasn't had their basic needs fulfilled.
